Learning Through STEM

My students need STEM kits that will allow them to engage in open-ended exploration and play-based inquiry experiences. Our school is being restructured under a Discovery Learning model and materials such as these will support that.

My Students

I teach in an integrated preschool classroom comprised of 20 students. The students attend school all day, and for many of them, this is their very first formal school experience. Eight of the students receive special education services and are on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The remaining twelve students are not on an IEP. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Seven students live in a single parent household and thirteen students live in a two parent household. Two students receive services under Project ACT, which is a district agency that provides direct instructional and support services to children and youth residing in temporary emergency shelters, traditional housing and doubled-up students staying with other families due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar situations.

The students love to learn and are excited to be at school each day.

They share their excitement each morning when they are asked how they feel, and roughly 75% of them exclaim "I feel happy because I love coming to school!" Our classroom is a safe, predictable, comfortable, encouraging, exploratory environment that allows them to take chances, make mistakes, work cooperatively, and develop new skills.

My Project

The requested STEM materials will encourage children to develop problem solving skills, engage in cooperative learning situations, and become critical thinkers--even at a young age! They will have a larger variety of materials to use in our Math and Science centers. The materials contain easy to use materials and great visual aids to assist students and make them very user friendly for independent learning.

When our school transitions to a Discovery Learning model, our learning will be much more student-focused, open-ended, and inquiry based.

These materials will allow students to learn about trial and error, persistence, and learning from mistakes.
