Learning Through Sight and Touch

Help me give my students laminating supplies and binders to allow them to interact with classroom materials and organize their work.

My Students

I teach a group of 6 students who are full of energy, creativity, and fun. All of my students are diagnosed on the autism spectrum and due to their disabilities they have difficulties with communication, daily life skills, and social interactions. In our classroom, we focus on helping them build these skills and become more engaged in the world around them which they are so eager to explore and understand.

Myself and my classroom team of 3 paraprofessionals work with each student using individualized programs to help them reach and exceed their goals.

My students goals range from learning to use their preferred method of communication to request desired items to learning how to label parts of whole objects. Each student learns in a different way and we work hard to customize instruction to meet their individual needs.

This is the second year that I am teaching most of my students and I have seen them grow and change a lot even over the course of a year. I am excited to keep working with these amazing children and guide them towards independence.

My Project

I am requesting a laminator, laminating sheets, a paper trimmer, Velcro dots, and binders for my special education classroom. My students have a variety of disabilities including autism. They require materials in multiple formats in order to learn best. When they have the opportunity to learn using visual and tangible materials, they are able to access content that they would otherwise struggle to understand. The laminator, laminating sheets, and paper trimmer would be used to make picture cards, adapted books, and visual schedules for my students. The Velcro dots would make these materials interactive for them. The students will be able to take the pieces on and off of their schedules, books and other learning activities to fully engage with the content.

Teaching towards independence requires progress monitoring.

Having binders would allow me to keep their work and data sheets organized. The students would be able to access all their work using their binders and begin to monitor their own progress.
