I work in a Title I school with some of the most amazing, creative, and hard-working students. More than 60% of my students come from a lower socio-economic home. Many of my students are ESL and many more qualify for special ed.
I have the best students and I want to give them the best!
Because of the daily obstacles my students face, some of them find education very challenging. Many come to school without their basic needs being met. It is hard to focus on math, science, or reading. I try to think outside of the box so that my kids are engaged and want to learn.
My Project
One of my all-time favorite book is Fish! by Stephen C. Lundin. The book focuses on play and making someone's day, among other things. A quote from the book says, "Making someone's day means going out of your way to create memories that make a difference." This fish philosophy can be applied easily to education and learning.
I want to spark a passion for learning, and I can do this by incorporating play into our lessons.
This project will help my students learn skills through thematic activities. A few ideas I have that will utilize the props and dress up items I am asking for are...
1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs day- Our class will learn about weather with the popular book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I will turn our classroom into a stormy day with food precipitating from the ceiling. Not only will we learn science, we will also learn reading skills from the picture book.
2. Fraction Boot Camp- Our class will learn and review fractions by participating in a boot camp. My students will need a camouflage scarf and a dog tag to play the part.
3. Text Feature Surgery- Our class will learn all of text features for non-fiction texts by performing surgery. In order to be surgeons, we will need a cap, gloves, and mask.
4. Crime Scene- Our class will learn to make inferences and predictions, based on a crime scene in our classroom. Students will become detectives and use clues to come up with a conclusion of what happened.
5. Book Tasting Event- Our class will "taste" a variety of books from a menu. I plan to set up a dining situation with a variety of books. A chef hat and apron will help us play the part.
