This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a high-poverty area in Southwest Florida. The area that is serviced by our school is a highly migrant area. Education is highly valued majority of my students have learned English as a second language, and often English is not spoken at home.
I have high expectations for ALL of my students.
I don't allow them, or anyone else, to make excuses for them. We work, we might cry, but we definitely get to celebrate a lot. There are many obstacles they must overcome.
Students in my class are hard workers who want to do well , but often do not have the foundational skills to be as successful as grade-level peers at other schools. We spend a lot of time celebrating their wins to keep them motivated, showing them that they are making progress towards their goal.s
My Project
"This is hard!", "I don't know how to do this.", These are phrases I hear everyday in my classroom. I hear them more times than I could ever count. Giving my students problem solving tasks results in a lot of frustration because they have not had much success in the past. They often don't know where to start, or how to proceed when they get stuck.
Kids learn through play.
Kids learn from each other. They learn from by being active. I plan to use the Marble Run in relays to encourage students to work together, as well as in science to have students go through the process of conducting experiments. The Spots and Beams will be used in collaborate games where students will work in teams to solve problems. They will help me to present the problems in a game format. For example, we might play a game were they have to get their team across the "hot lava" using only the spots and beams. They will learn how to communicate with others, respecting differences of opinion, make a plan, execute, and work efficiently.
All of these skills are necessary for my students to be success this year and in the future. This equipment will give me a different way to present tasks that help them practice STEM skills and how to persevere when things get difficult.
