This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I elementary school in a NYC borough. My Kindergarten students are eager and ready to learn despite the hardships they face, such as learning disabilities, learning English as a second language, poverty and coming from an immigrant population. They are full of questions and at times shy, but they love coming to school and learning something new everyday. Many of the parents have a limited education and are unable to provide academic support. That is why a positive and enriching school experience and the proper tools are so important. I want them to have the chances and opportunities that are not offered in many parts of the world, a chance to rise above their circumstances.
My Project
This project will give my students an opportunity to learn with hands on activities. As children with special needs and also English Language Learners these STEM learning centers and manipulatives provide multi sensory stimulation. It will promote their critical thinking skills, it will develop their expressive language as well as working in groups to solve problems. These are skills that they will need for the rest of their life and promote successful academic and achievement experiences. STEM activities will also boost their self-esteem as they experience success and learn to make predictions. They already love to ask questions… “Where is the sun?” (on a cloudy day), “When is it coming back?”, “Why did it go away?”, etc. We have several magnets in the classroom and they love to walk around the classroom seeing what it will attract and then they make lists of the items. The Lakeshore materials explore magnetism, motion and buoyancy, it includes hands-on experiments and engineering activities. Research supports the link between young learner's motivation, skill development and the availability of opportunities to discover the world by themselves., (Playing to Learn, 2016). My students are very curious of their surroundings and have a great desire to learn. My classroom is in need of STEM resources and supplies and my students have had very little exposure to these types of materials and resources. This project will help us change that.
