This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Preschoolers learn through play. The American Academy of Pediatrics has called play the “work” of children. It is how they learn to interact in their environment and how they develop their speech, language, and social-emotional skills. As a speech-language pathologist working in a preschool setting at a Title One School, I work with preschoolers from low-income families that have significant delays in their speech and language skills, including many with Autism. Many of my students are non-verbal and do not even have the joint attention skills to sit and participate in a back and forth interactions. By purchasing toys that are engaging, language-based, and demonstrate a cause and effect relationship, I hope to make more progress in my student's speech and language skills.

Play is the foundation to learning language.

Purchasing the toys I requested will allow me to set up play-based situations for my students to promote functional communication skills and social emotional development with their peers. For example, the peek-a-boo houses will allow me to work on concepts of in/out, more, open, colors, etc.. The ice cream set will allow me to target requesting, concepts of more/less, big/small, colors, numbers, etc. The toys chosen were all picked with the speech and language goals of my students in mind.

Working at my school, I have limited resources to engage my students and promote their communication in a fun and effective way. I hope you will help provide these resources for my students so I can help give them a voice to be heard!
