My Students
I am a teacher at Waiakea Elementary School. Our school is located in Hilo, Hawaii. Waiakea Elementary is a Title I school with a high population of low-income families. We service approximately 850 students.
My first grade students are cute, sweet, and definitely unique.
Each student is "one of a kind.” My students have their own personalities, interests, and life experiences.
As a teacher in at a Title 1 school, I have to keep in mind that academics are not the only challenge for many of these students. Due to the high population of low income families, it’s common that families struggle to provide necessities and academic support at home. Although many of these students are faced with economic challenges, they are eager to learn and happy to be in school.
My Project
Students love to play but the vog is in the way. Research has shown that brain breaks and hands on learning increases student engagement and helps students retain information. The math and language arts activities I’m seeking will be used to supplement lessons, provide diversified activities based on level, and to provide opportunities for learning throughout the day.
Students will use these centers to reinforce learning, be engaged, and retain content.
The Kilauea volcano is currently erupting on the Big Island of Hawaii, so going out to play is rare. The vog due to the volcanic activity is almost unbearable. The vog causes respiratory issues or headaches for some of the students, so staying indoors is the safest place to be. Thank you for helping the students find a way to stay inside, learn, and have fun all at the same time.
More than half of students from low‑income households
