Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students come to the library for a personalized experience that invites them to enhance their strengths, as well as discover new things about themselves and the world around them. A exploration area is an excellent landscape where children develop physical, social, language, and cognitive concepts.

Students who attend our school are a mix of neighborhood children and those who have selected to attend based upon our mission and vision.

The children range in age from three to fourteen and represent the variety of cultural diversity in our region. While a great majority of them are from low-income families or those where English is not the primary home language, they come to school with an incredible capacity to work toward excellence in many facets of life--from social to academic, from linguistic to artistic. Our teachers are united in teaching students to adopt a growth mindset, that open-mindedness, dedication, commitment, and practice are key to maturing and reaching goals. Students are granted special privileges such as listening to music while studying or working outside the classroom when they consistently demonstrate trust, respect, and responsibility--the framework of our school culture.

My Project

Scientists, parents, and teachers know that children learn through play. Toys and tools aligned to the developmental age and interests of our students will help them practice, acquire, and master social, physical, linguistic, and cognitive skills. For example, children in early primary grades will enjoy working with their peers to solve puzzles and play simple games designed to bolster math concepts or employ early literacy competencies. Students who are a little older still crave social interaction with their peers. They can benefit from games that combine learning and fun and will be challenged by the games that have complex rules and multiple ways of solving problems. Constructive tools spark creative expression, attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and build connections within memory. Older students can interact with the kits independently in a more sophisticated fashion, or they can work with younger students as role models.

Donations to this project will improve the library dramatically by showing visitors that a library is not just a repository for books, but an information and resource area designed for learning of all types.

School libraries need to be vibrant, active spaces where children are engaged in exploration and discovery, collaboration and innovation. Children deserve an inviting space where they can explore their interests--individually or with others--in ways that meet their developmental needs.
