Learning Through Play-Doh!

My students need hands-on dough manipulatives, such as alphabet stampers, cutters, and rollers, for our Daily 5 work-with-words center and the dough shape maker for math.

My Students

After surviving the May 20th tornado, I am lucky enough to teach energetic 2nd graders. They enjoy learning through hands-on activities and movement. Staying seated for long periods of time is too much stillness for their little bodies. Albert Einstein said, "Play is the highest form of research"

My students face many challenges.

Many come from single parent homes with little to no parental support regarding academics. Most families find it difficult to provide the basic needs for their children and Briarwood had many students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. The children that attend Briarwood are comprised of middle to low income families. Many come from multi-sibling families and a large portion of those families rent their homes. Some have parents that are no longer or never married therefor they frequently travel from parent-to-parent throughout the school week. Many teachers offer free before-after school tutoring to educate the students who lack parental support at home.

My Project

The upper and lowercase alphabet dough stampers, the number dough stampers, the dough shape makers, and the dough rollers will all be valuable resources for us to use in our hands-on workshops. These items will provide another way for the students to build words, practice spelling, and learn about shapes while developing their fine motor skills and learning in a fun way.

Children in the primary grades need more than paper and pencils or continuous seat work for math and literacy learning.

Learning in the 2nd grade still must include fun and exciting learning to keep the attention of young students.
