My Students

Hello! I currently teach at a pre-k -3rd-grade school! Our school has self-contained classrooms for students with special needs from kindergarten to third grade. There are also a number of different preschool programs at my school, including two self-contained Pre-k classrooms, a blended preschool classroom, and three general education preschool classrooms. I am grateful to teach in a Significantly Modified with Intensive Supports Preschool Classroom (self-contained classroom).

I currently have 20 amazing students with varying personalities, interests, and abilities!

All of my students have moderate to severe disabilities and have limited expressive language. They communicate using picture cards and gestures to indicate what they want and need. My students come from various socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. During the day, my paraprofessionals and I use various teaching strategies in order to meet the academic, personal, and social-emotional needs of our students!

My Project

My students need developmentally appropriate and engaging toys and activities for free choice time in my classroom. Every day, students get an allotted amount of time to select a toy or an activity to play with. I show them a choice board with pictures of the toys that they can choose from and they then select the picture of the toy they wish to play with.

The toys and books that I have selected for this project are activities that I know all of my students will love.

I am confident my students will especially love the Big Books. When I read a big book, the students are more engaged and interested in the story. Last year, the students loved these books so much that they would go get the big book and then come find me to read it to them. I am very excited that they are so interested in reading and I look forward to watching their love for reading grow.
