Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love learning. I am very fortunate this school year to be progressing with them to the next grade level. However, this means that I now need new grade level texts for the kids. They love to learn about other cultures and love to see the world through pictures and through science.

My school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.

Many of my students are hugging the poverty line and often don't have something to eat except when they are in school. Since this is their living situation it is nearly impossible for them to discover other places and learn about other experiences. Magazines help broaden the imagination by taking children to places through picture and captions. This teaches them basic concepts that are needed to bridge the gap of learning. We expect the students to understand what we are telling them, yet many of them have never seen what we are speaking of. Student magazines are a great way to link concepts and for them to have fun and learn all at the same time.

My Project

My students need subscriptions to Scholastic News, nonfiction magazines, and fraction workbooks. My students will use these materials in small group settings to dissect the information and link it to other information. They also use as a speaking point in whole group when we are discussing different types of stories. Many times I say, " Remember we talked about this ...?" I love saving the magazines so it can also reiterate the lesson I am teaching. This past school year I saved a magazine about the Chinese new year. At the end of the year we were studying China, I pulled out the magazine and the students were able to make visual connections. Students will learn from these magazines to love learning through math, reading, and science. Everything will be on grade level so the students will meet the new common core requirements.

Students will gain knowledge that lasts forever.

Once you have learned something it will never truly be unlearned. Students will travel to places in their imagination through pictures and texts. It will promote a love of reading. Having the magazines is a wonderful way to reach every learner, they have pictures for visual learners, text for more abstract learners, and forced verbal discussion for audio learners. All students regardless of their learning style can truly be reached.
