My Students
Did you enjoy music class? My students love music and can learn many important lessons through music. I work with students with Developmental Cognitive Disabilities. They don't get the chance to go to music class once they are in high school because of their disability.
I work with students that have Developmental Cognitive Disabilities that all come from low income and are on free lunch.
So many every day opportunities they can't participate in because of their disability. My students desire to be like their peers and want to do many of the same things that their same age peers can participate in. Learning and playing music is one of those things. They are limited because of their disabilities, but they also have great abilities and desire to learn and work with music.
My Project
I am hoping to purchase a keyboard, my students will be able to use the keyboard and learn basic notes. They can have a sense of accomplishment and play for their peers. I am also ordering a bin of rhythm instruments, which students will be able to play together and create using teamwork and communication. I am also hoping to order music activities and CD's to help students learn, experiment and play with the materials. These materials will also teach my students important social skills allowing students to communicate, work together, and take turns.
This project is so important to my students with Developmental Cognitive disabilities because they so badly want to be able to do what their non-disabled peers are able to accomplish.
Providing my students with music instruments and supplies can give them an area to excel and a sense of accomplishment. They can also have fun while learning very important social skills that so many students with disabilities need to learn to be successful after school.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
