Learning Through Movies

My students need 5 movies that compliment their reading selections throughout the year.

English is a tricky subject to teach at the middle school level. Some students love it and some students absolutely loathe it. Since the skills learned in the English classroom are essential to a student's success in the future it is essential to get all students invested in learning. One easy way that appeals to all students is incorporating film in the classroom. Watching film in the classroom can be beneficial in several different ways. Watching the film of a novel can serve as a great incentive to get a class through a novel. Watching a film can also help students understand the historical setting of a novel prior to reading. After watching a filmed version of a novel students can also gain skills in comparing and contrasting as well as writing. They may be employing English skills and they don't even know it! I am requesting a strange collection of films for my classroom, but I used them all last year to great success. "The Diary of Anne Frank" for after they read the play. "Speak" and "Holes" to go alongside the respective novels. "Hercules" to complement the study of mythology and "Rebel Without a Cause" to help students learn about the 1950s in preparation for reading "The Outsiders". Often watching movies is the highlight of class for some students. Little do they know they are learning as they watch!
