Learning Through Movies: Wakanda & Beyond

My students need to become excited about learning using current movies Black Panther comics and A Wrinkle in Time books.

My Students

Science should be fun and science should be challenging. Science must be taught in such a way that students from a lifelong love of the subject matter, and, hopefully, pursue a career in the science field. I teach seventh-grade science at a magnet middle school in a downtown urban area. I have 103 diverse learners who are taught using a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum.

My students are diverse.

Our school has many nationalities represented. My students are high achieving and from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered a school of need according to the number of students who qualify financially for free lunch programs.

Some students come to school hungry and are not truly concerned with what we have to teach them because they are overwhelmed by the thoughts of where their next meal may come from. Other students question if we actually have something to teach them that will truly make a difference in their lives. Still others wonder if learning can truly be fun.

My Project

All of my students are talking about Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time. What a better way to engage students into learning and also building positive relationships than having access to the literature behind these hit movies. I am requesting the collection of Black Panther comics, 5 Black Panther coloring books for each class to decorate it as a community, and A Wrinkle in Time collection.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and they need to see books in their class that show all types of characters.

The Black Panther movie & A Wrinkle in Time is being widely celebrated for diversity; this is a huge opportunity to get students in my class engaged in reading by introducing them to the graphic novel genre to "hook" them further into reading. Being inspired by Mr. Barendt’s winning project, I hope to give my students the opportunity to think outside the box, whether through STEAM, Literacy, and move. The possibilities are endless.
