Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach blended Pre-Kindergarten with students ranging from ages 3-5. My school is located in a low-income urban area with a high population of English-language learners. I am fascinated by my student’s fearlessness to speak in their second language.
In our blended classroom, 1/3 of my students have special needs.
We rely heavily on books throughout our play-based curriculum. My students latch on to engaging stories and familiar characters to make connections to themselves and their world. We love circle time, which is a special opportunity to interact with a story and establish a classroom community.
My Project
Well-told stories have a profound influence on children. When learning through books, children can create strong connections to that knowledge. This project will allow me to bring rich literature into the homes of my students during remote learning, with the hope to add these titles to my classroom bookshelves when that opportunity comes.
I carefully selected these engaging stories in order to bring my virtual lessons to life, create a stronger classroom community, and lay the foundation for these little learners to become global citizens.
Books also allow for young children to make sense of the world around them. These titles will allow my students to be represented in our curriculum, while exposed to others differences simultaneously. My hope is to provide my students with a meaningful remote learning experience with the help of diverse stories.
