Learning Through Literacy Centers

My students need literacy centers to help them build reading and writing skills.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see that my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. We spend a big part of the day together, and one of my goals is to always provide them with authentic, meaningful experiences on a daily basis.

My students are inquisitive, curious and very eager to learn.

They love to learn about new things and especially love hands-on activities. Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, some of these things may prevent them from acquiring the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk into my classroom my job is to not only teach them but to make their day a memorable one. I want them to leave my class on a daily basis thinking "learning is fun".

My Project

I am kindly asking for a variety of literacy centers for my wonderful group of kindergarten students. Children learn through hands on activities. The literacy centers I am asking for will help my students achieve academic readiness in the skills needed to excel in Kindergarten. They will be able to practice writing their letters, build words and practice sight words.

Having these different centers in our classroom will help create an environment of center based learning.

This will give children the opportunity to practice the skills they need help with, and work with other children. They will be learning but having fun at the same time. Unfortunately, the curriculum does not leave much room for center based learning. As an educator of 21 years, I have seen first hand how children really do learn through learning based centers.

Centers are a critical part of Kindergarten. By having these centers in my classroom, my students will have the opportunity to work with other children and learn through hands on center-based activities.
