Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach kindergarten at an elementary school with a high percentage of English language learners. Eighty-five percent come from economically disadvantaged households.

Many of my students are attending school for the very first time.

This puts them at a disadvantage compared to students with pre-academic skills. Despite their hardships, even my most challenging students come to school excited to learn. They take to heart my teachings and leave the classroom more socially, emotionally, and academically ready for the year ahead.

When I asked my students what they learned during the year, several said they learned how to respect others and resolve conflict in our classroom. Similarly, the culture at our school is characterized by respect.

My Project

Kindergarten lays the foundation for future years of learning. Our youngest students come in eager to learn, but they require a lot of support. Centers keep students engaged in meaningful activities that reinforce learning while the teacher provides that much-needed support through small-group instruction.

The listening center is a favorite of students and teachers alike.

Students love being read to and need models of fluent reading. The listening center satisfies those needs in the absence of an adult. As students listen to their favorite stories again and again, they learn new vocabulary in context and develop their comprehension skills.

Last year we used a junction box, wired headphones, and a partially functioning CD/cassette player. The cassette player didn't work. We inherited all of these from the previous classroom teacher. I was very grateful for the supplies, but I noticed very soon that the center required more tech support than it was worth. My students would often ask me to untangle wires and adjust the volume for each headphone when I was with a small group. Sometimes listening to the story, took less time than my tech support!

With a new classroom CD/cassette player and wireless headphones, my students will be able to work independently at the listening center right away. This will also allow me to maximize my teaching time and my small group's learning time.
