My students need both Lego expansion packs to enhance the StoryStarter kits we already have by adding in a variety of social studies and reading lessons.

My Students
Do you remember how much fun you had playing with Legos when you were younger? Your imagination would go wild while creating magnificent castles and magical scenes. What if I told you my 2nd graders could build upon their reading, writing, and social studies skills by using Legos?
I have 26 enthusiastic learners in my classroom.
They are eager to learn, and I am constantly trying to find engaging ways to quench their thirst for knowledge. However, when it comes to writing, it can be challenging to get my students motivated to write. "I have nothing to write about," is something I hear quite often. Many lessons have been spent on teaching these students where to gain ideas for writing, but it still proves to be difficult when that pencil hits the paper. Writing skills are still developing at this age and my students don't understand the need to write. Our school has tried a variety of writing programs to improve writing. My students are extremely creative and with the right tools, have the potential to be amazing readers and writers.
My Project
Recently my classroom received a Donors Choose grant for Lego StoryStarter. Using this hands on approach to create ideas for writing has been so much fun. The kids look forward to pulling out the Legos and building these magnificent creations. We then use these creations to write detailed stories.
This year Lego came out with two Expansion kits to accompany the StoryStarter kits -- Communities and Fairy Tales. Each expansion pack includes specific pieces that would add a variety of lessons for social studies and reading. One of our main social studies units at the beginning of the year covers Communities. We learn about our own community, what makes a community, and people in communities. This would be a great addition to that unit! We also spend time on different reading genres, including fairy tales! I would love to use the expansion pack for students to retell fairy tales or even create their own!
Providing these expansion packs would only add to the many different ways we already use our Lego kits in the classroom.
We have already had such great excitement and motivation when using StoryStarter and writing has become something they look forward to. I'm always looking for ways we can incorporate Legos into other subjects and the expansion packs would help with that!
