I teach third grade in an elementary school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Our school is a title one school where all of our children get free lunch and most of them come from low income families.
This year the children will be working hard on their math strategies to prepare them for their citywide and state wide exams. Sometimes I feel that the children are looking for an escape from their math books or when they have extra time after a lesson. Why not make learning math strategies more fun and the concepts so much more accessible? I believe it's a wonderful way to get their math strategies learned by practicing them independently. These independent math centers are wonderful tools that give children a creative way to develop different math skills independently and prepare them for their exams.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
