This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach children with autism in grades kindergarten, first, and second. My students are all on different levels with various skills and abilities. Throughout the day, we work on social skills, communication skills, play skills, functional academics, and following routines. My students love hands-on activities. It truly helps them to generalize their learning with concrete activities. The progress my students make may look different when compared to their peers, but the strides they make are truly remarkable. By having different types of games and other materials in the classroom, the students can be more fully engaged and active in their learning!
My Project
Each of my students is so amazingly unique, with so many different skills and ways of learning. I love watching their progress and seeing them get excited to learn. I see them most excited when they have a chance to play a game, even when they are actually doing work! They learn a skill, use language, and engage in socialization with just a simple file-folder activity. They benefit so much from visuals and hands-on activities. Having these items in the classroom will help them to keep learning and loving it!
Every second matters with my students.
We do not have time to waste. What I want most for my students, is for them to be able to function and engage in the current environment - socially and communicatively. Children with autism have a difficult time relating to others and engaging with their peers. Games allow them to practice taking turns, talking to peers, answering questions, and asking questions. My students will benefit from the activities I chose because they give them the opportunity to practice these social skills AND functional academic skills.
I have requested file folder games that can become such an integral part of their learning! Each file folder game works at specific functional academic skills. These games help my students to generalize their learning and master a skill through fun and excitement! The file folder games will not only help with academics, but also social and communication skills. Through these games, they learn how to wait, take turns, talk to their peers, and ask and answer questions!
