it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you ever hear of a teacher who's students had the same exact strengths and weaknesses? Well, that is definitely not the case in my classroom. All of my students' abilities vary, some needing more modifications than others.
First grade is very demanding in all subject areas.
Students are expected to leave with fluency in reading and writing. They are also expected to know many math concepts, Science topics and comprehension in Social Studies. Working in a low socio-economic community this becomes an even greater challenge. My students are English Language Learners whose native languages consists of Chinese or Spanish. This language barrier doesn't stop them from wanting to continue learning. My students are always willing to overcome obstacles to learn new concepts, however as an educator its my job to keep them motivated.
My Project
A major part of our day consists of Reader's Workshop. During reader's workshop students branch out and work in different centers. One of these centers consist of Word Study. Having Reading and Writing Activity Stations would allow them to work with a group and learn different parts of speech. These stations are also a great way to assess students and allow me to notice some of their specific strengths and weaknesses.
Having Science BINGO games in our science center will also motivate students to learn through games. BINGO games have always seemed to be an asset in my classroom because students don't realize that they are learning different strategies and concepts. They enjoy themselves very much and take in all the knowledge learned and use it at a later time during conversing.
While my students are eager to learn, motivation is a key factor.
By donating these items to my classroom we will be able to integrate reading, writing, science and social studies through language. Reading and writing stations will also assist my students with their NYSESLAT Exams (Exam for English Language Learners). Trust me when I say, you will change more lives then you can ever imagine by helping our future professionals!
