My Students

I teach a great group of kindergarten students at a rural school near the coast of South Carolina. Our school houses Pre-K through fifth grade with a student population of about 800 students. Although our elementary school is one of the biggest in our district, we have a family feeling to it that visitors notice when they walk through the front doors. We have a total of six kindergarten classes. With a school this big, our population is extremely diverse. We have very low economic families in our community, but these children are always eager to learn and ready to overcome obstacles. I want to help my students who are just beginning their school careers go even further and really push themselves. Your donations will make that dream possible for my classroom.

My Project

Dramatic play is a vital part of our kindergarten classroom and is crucial in helping to create a healthy development in young children. In the dramatic play area, children are allowed to escape reality and pretend to be someone or something different than themselves. They are able to create situations and actions that go along with the role they choose. Engaging children in dramatic play deepens their understanding of the world and they develop skills that they will use throughout their lives.

During dramatic play, the children in my classroom aren't "just playing"; they are actually learning through their play!

They dramatize situations and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. Dramatic play or pretend play helps children learn. Pretending is important in child development. Through pretend play: Children learn about themselves and the world. These experiences are some of the first ways children learn about their likes and dislikes, their interests, and their abilities.

When children pretend, they create pictures in their minds about past experiences, made-up people, and all the many situations they imagine. This is a form of abstract thinking, which we want our children to develop. When children are playing pretend with each other, they are often sharing knowledge and learning from one another. This is one of the most effective paths towards learning and language development. When engaged in dramatic play, children are using language to explain what they are doing and to ask and answer questions about their play. This process increases vocabulary and fosters comprehension of words and phrases.

Dramatic play takes many forms, and choosing food to prepare as well as cleaning up and taking care of a baby are all important parts of dramatic play.
