My Students
Do you remember exploring the roles of family members, community helpers, and other members of the community through pretend play in your kindergarten classroom? I want my students to have the same opportunity for learning, but my new classroom is void of a dramatic play area and materials.
I teach kindergarten at a school located on a military base.
Almost all of my students will be children of Active Duty Military. Many will be attending school for the first time ever.
Although these students are only five years old, they have often moved several times already in their young lives. At some point, most will or already have spent a period of time separated from the parent or parents they love.
My school works hard to meet the needs of the children of the men and women serving our country. We have added an additional kindergarten class this coming school year to better serve the students.
This year we have experienced quite a blow to our budget, which leaves the school with very few resources to purchase the materials needed to put together the additional kindergarten classroom.
My Project
I have requested dress-up costumes and pretend play props for my students to use as they explore the different aspects of being part of a community. Through the donation of dramatic play materials, my students will be able to meet many of the social studies standards in Kindergarten.
More importantly, it will give the students an opportunity to act out their feelings and socialize with peers. The socialization is key in a military child's life as he/she moves from place to place. The students will need these skills to adjust to a new location and make friends.
My classroom is a collection of materials I begged and borrowed to make the best out of a situation that many teachers are facing.
I have spent much of my own money, and people have donated used toys to help create a welcoming classroom environment. This project will give the students much needed materials.
