This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in Southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and busing restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.

However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.

These students are mostly English language learners who crave and require countless opportunities each day to hear and use English with their peers. My students are impressionable and eager. I try to take advantage of that every day!

My Project

The classroom collage box includes kinesthetic materials such as pompoms, pipecleaners, crinkle strips, and feathers which will offer students different forms of sensory experiences. The stickers, google eyes, sequins, and foam pieces that will encourage and motivate students to continue practicing fine motor skills. Cutting and coloring are fine, but these materials would offer new strengthening exercises and exciting possibilities for students to express themselves. It is difficult to evoke unique results when all students are using the same materials repeatedly. I have seen amazing results simply by offering a few new items!

Glue sticks are much easier for small hands and the collage items are a lot of fun.

They also require a different type of movement to use. Buttons and beads are reusable and will last a long time and reach many years' worth of students. Students are more likely to participate if they love the materials that they are able to use!
