This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school." -Albert Einstein.
My students are here to learn how to respect one another, understand differences, and hopefully understand that part of a great education is creating safety for one another and themselves.
I am a social worker for three different schools in one building.
Each school has its own personality, its own culture, and its issues. One thing they all have in common is that they are all three middle schools. If you remember anything from middle school or have a child in middle school, you will understand that they are faced with so much pressure from peers and are most vulnerable. This is the age that they are learning to be independent yet are scared to express that independence in fear of rejection or ridicule. My students are thirsty for acceptance, independence, and just starting to understand what the word identity means.
My Project
I want to help create a safe space for all my students. It is so important that each student has a beautiful space they can go to and talk to someone who can help them sort out any issues they might be going through. That the students know they are not going through it alone. This is why I've ordered the social work self-esteem poster. I also ordered therapy diversity dolls to help each student understand other cultures, disabilities, and beliefs. I plan to use these dolls in play therapy. I will use the dolls to see how the children play with them, what culture they are familiar with, and then use dolls from different cultures to help them understand the similarities in their differences. The biggest reason why students bully one another is lack of understanding about other people's experiences. Lastly, I've ordered feeling bean bags. These are manipulatives that will help the students put words to their own feelings so that they can learn to understand the reason behind the feelings.
This project will change my students' life because they will learn how to respect one another.
If they can start to understand the differences not only between them and their classmates, but the different cultures in all three schools. The building can be a safer environment for our children to learn. If you feel safe, you learn better.
