This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Research shows that language and reading strategies are best learned if taught within a content area. In isolation the concepts presented might seem disconnected and boring. I want to teach my students how to read, develop their English Language and teach them social studies at the same time.

My students all are English Language Learners.

They all qualify for federal free lunches. They live is an impoverished community where it is not safe for children to play in their own yards. Many of them spend countless hours at school. They are dropped off as early as 7:00am and do not get picked up until 6:00pm. They receive most if not all their meals at school. They do not have books at home or other educational resources. Parents work long hours just to pay rent. They live with in Southern California yet never have visited the beach. Despite all their hardships and mishaps they are amazing human beings that at a young age the value of education and have a burning desire to succeed. They work extra hard in school to overcome their lack of school readiness.

My Project

It is essential to have a Friends and Family Thematic Libraries for our first unit of study. As second graders the first thing they learn about in social studies is the roles of each family member and what the characteristics of a good friend are. These two thematic libraries will help us study and analyze these characteristics. In addition, it is imperative for English Language Learners to have pictures to tie into new vocabulary. This is where the Families Poster Pack come in place. I will use them to explain and teach new vocabulary. Then we will label and have them up accessible for students to tap into if they need. Visuals create a world of a difference when teaching English Language Learners.

Please provide these invaluable resources for my students.

I need help to close that achievement gap. Education is their only ticket out of poverty and their crime infested neighborhood. They deserve the highest quality education and I intend to give it to them. Please join my efforts in breaking the illiteracy and poverty cycle one classroom at a time.
