Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The first day of a new school year & there they were: 36 little faces full of excitement & wonder. I asked, "What do you want to learn with me?" & made a list - a long one! "ABC's," "the alphabet," & "letters," were consistent favorites. Obviously, they want to learn the letters of the alphabet!
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Flashcards and worksheets are developmentally inappropriate and ineffective activities for 4-year-old's. Success is achieved through activities that offer varied learning modalities and opportunities for repeated practice.
My Project
The ABC Floor Puzzle and A to Z Puzzles allow children to practice alphabet skills independently, with a partner, or a couple of friends. The Inside Answers Alphabet Card Set contains self-checking puzzles with photos of common objects that offer clues to introduce letters and their sounds. For additional reinforcement of letter recognition, phonics skills, and problem solving, The Big Box of Alphabet Knowledge is key. My young learners will coordinate cognitive, visual, social, fine motor, and oral language skills as they work with the Alphabet Lacing Kit, Alpha Pops, and Manuscript Letter Beads. ABC Puppets and big books will supply literature and dramatic play to round out my repertoire of alphabet resources.
Early literacy skills such as letter recognition and phonemic awareness are strong predictors of future reading success.
My new students are eager to get started with puzzles, manipulative's, and books that will be valuable, motivational resources. These young learners are full of enthusiasm. All they need are the tools!
