My Students
My school vision statement is "Believe, Achieve, Succeed" and the stepping stones of academic success begin with early childhood literacy.
My 28 kindergarteners attend a Title I school in a lower income urban area.
It is not surprising to find that many of these eager learners have not had any prior education (no Pre-K or Headstart) or even academic stimulation (no concepts of colors, letters and lack of fine motor skills). They love to learn by movement, exploring, and playing games.
My Project
The resources I'm requesting focus on letter recognition through various techniques and games. The alphabet games focus on recognizing and matching capital and lower case letters, letter formation, and an introduction to the sounds that the letters make. These resources will give my students the opportunities to recognize their letters and sounds and began their journey as successful readers.
Academic expectations for kindergarten have greatly increased in the past ten years.
These five and six year olds lay the foundation of their academic success in kindergarten. They must have the "basic skills" down to reach the end-of-year kindergarten goals of being an early reader. These "basic skills" rely on letter recognition. Letter formatting, recognition, and sounds are key to becoming successful readers. These students need a plethora of activities to help reach these goals. Thanks!
