My Project

My kindergarten students are curious and enthusiastic learners who love exploring the world around them. They love to learn and thrive whenever we can do hands-on learning. With spring right around the corner, we would love to add a butterfly garden and books about spring and the butterfly life cycle to our classroom.

The books and butterfly garden will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom and hands on learning that I strive to create.

Supplying our students with their own live caterpillars will allow them to observe the life cycle of butterflies up close and personal, from the moment they hatch from their eggs to the time they transform into chrysalides and emerge as beautiful butterflies. Watching butterflies go through their life cycles will help cement in my students that a cycle is never-ending.

Having a butterfly garden would also help us see the butterfly lifecycle happen within our own classroom. Students will document the caterpillars at a learning station every day, just like real scientists do. This will help them learn the scientific method and teach them to ask questions about our environment. I want to encourage my students' curiosity about the world and this is one way to help foster that.

The books will help students visualize what they are going to be learning. Again, like scientists, we have to do research before we do an experiment. This will help to build background knowledge for their observations.

This project will enable students to learn about the importance of butterflies in our ecosystem, the role of pollination in the plant kingdom, and how they can help protect these beautiful creatures. Students will be able to journal their observations and create artwork and stories inspired by their learning experience.
