This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine leaving your home, sacrificing everything and moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day. Our classroom is bare.
I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population in the poorest town in Long Island, NY.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We are developing learning stations so we can listen, speak, read and write very quickly. We help students learn English while holding on and becoming literate in their own language as well. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
My Project
I am requesting replacement supplies for an existing project that has been funded on Donors Choose. I want my students to create writing each day as part of our language experience. Creating writing that is original and creative is a great way for my students to become familiar with the English language. They will have the opportunity to create original writing that is both artistic and creative.
The refill supplies will help my students become ready for writing in English.
They will use the card stock, pens and laminate refill to create long lasting handmade, handwritten books and cards to help them be proficient English language learners.
