My Students

“The greatest wealth is health.” – Virgil "If you try to do your best, there is no failure" – Mike Farrell

Our school is ranked as a high poverty school with 99% of our students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch.

I teach what is called a Self Contained Cross Categorical Academic class of typically about 15 students, Kindergarten to 3rd grade. The disabilities in my classroom range in severity. As you can imagine, trying to teach multiple grade levels at once can be challenging but somehow with our organized chaos, my educational aide and I make it happen. Each and every one of my students is making progress to meet their annual goals. Teaching at my school has been a blessing because I know that, even on the hardest days, I have little ones who come to school and love the consistency and love what they get at school. Not only do I teach my students academics, but I try to push them to do their absolute best and show them that even though they may have a disability, they can do anything if they set their mind to it.

My Project

I am always looking for ways to encourage my students to stay active and healthy. We do not have a gym and due to the extreme heat in Phoenix we do not always have a chance to go outside and play; so when we are able to do so, I want to make sure that it counts. Playing on scooters will benefit my students in many ways. Scooters will give my students many opportunities to explore various ways to move their bodies. Scooters will be a wonderful way to experience free play in a non-intimidating environment while conditioning their bodies. They will be able to creatively play which will allow for self-expression without judgment from an audience. Using scooters as a class during recess will be a simple way to develop teamwork and address the issue of good sportsmanship. The scooter board holder will give us a safe way to store and transport our scooters.

Adding scooter games to recess will give my students an opportunity to engage in beneficial play.

It will give them a chance to create and transform their own ideas into endless movement opportunities. Scooter activities will keep my students moving and will encourage healthy exercise habits.
