My Students

Spread out! 35 kids in a small classroom leaves me scrambling to take learning away from the desk.

My students are from the highest performing public middle school in inner-city Maryland.

87% qualify for free or reduced lunch with a 100% are African American population. We are a college preparatory middle school in a city with 40%+ drop out rates. Our first graduating class of students have a 100% college attendance rate. Our kids defy the statistics.

My Project

By purchasing bean bag and other floor seating, I can create new and exciting learning spaces for my 5th graders. With 35 kids in a small classroom, the traditional desk seating makes the room feel cramped. Alternate "cool" seating allows me to reward those working hardest with a preferred seat and create small informal activities in various corners of the room. Lastly, it provides a warm and comfortable place for students to do homework, read, write, and relax outside of classroom hours.

Seating like this creates a warm and welcoming classroom environment that makes students want to be in school learning.

My room is always filled with kids- before and after school and I strive to have a safe place they feel is their second home.
