Learning Spaces = Happy Faces (Part 2)

My students need an activity rug where they can come together for large group activities and lessons and it will also provide a learning space for small group activities.

My Students

"Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning...They have to play with what they know to be true in order to find out more, and then they can use what they learn in new forms of play," Fred Rogers said, and my students need an activity rug for a clean and defined area of play.

My Kindergarten class is comprised of two half-day classes with 22 students in each class.

My students are energetic and eager learners who look forward each day to working in the different learning spaces in our classroom. We are a lower middle income school on a very tight budget.

My Project

The lessons and activities that take place on the activity rug are essential components to kindergarteners' learning experiences. Rug activities help build a strong and caring classroom community and help reinforce students' attention span. Having a large activity rug will also provide another learning space in the classroom. Sitting together and keeping the students close during whole group instruction helps to keep them engaged in the lessons. The large activity rug will also be used for small group learning centers. Students will be able to work together to put together large themed puzzles, use blocks to build, create designs using pattern blocks, and many other activities. These activities are important for Kindergarteners because they provide hands-on learning, engage them in thinking and problem solving, allow for decision making, and allows them to work independently, collaboratively, and successfully.

An effective designed classroom has the potential for positively influencing all areas of a child's development: physical, social/emotional, and cognitive.

Most importantly, a quality environment can provide a home like setting that "feels" like a good place to be.
