My students need board games to learn social skills, how to follow directions, and how to be a good sport.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember a time when children were given opportunities to socialize with each other? With the increasing demand of high-stakes testing and the decreasing amount of time families have to spend with their children, kids are losing the opportunity to learn social skills.
I teach in a high-need school, where most students come from low-income families and a majority are English Language Learners.
Many students come from families where both parents have multiple jobs. Students often spend little or no quality time with their families during the week. This being said, many of my students lack certain social skills and sportsmanship skills. They rarely have the opportunity to learn the rules of a game and play it with peers their own age. Our school does have a recess time of 30 minutes a day, but they have nothing to do! We have no playground equipment and very few outdoor toys for students to use. And if it rains, students must sit inside the auditorium watching a movie. No interaction, no socialization, no skill-building, no fun. When students are bored, they find other means of entertainment. Unfortunately, this often leads to trouble with gossiping, teasing, and bullying.
My Project
With your donation, I will be able to provide classic game experiences during their 30 minutes of free time. Students can play the classics, such as Clue, Monopoly, Sorry, and Parcheesi. It's not "just playing". There are many skills involved when "playing" a board game. Some of these skills include: following directions, good sportsmanship, counting, money, reasoning and deduction, strategy, problem solving to name a few! I am hoping to improve these skills among my students as well as limit opportunities for gossiping and teasing.
We all know that reading, writing, and math are important to students' success in the real world.
But what about people skills? I am trying to create well-rounded students, that can succeed at any level. Help me create tomorrow's problem solvers and strategic thinkers!
