This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hands-on Science! I teach a mixed third and fourth grade special education class. Our school is a high need public school in the inner city of New York.

My students are so eager to learn, however their disabilities make it harder for them to learn. The best way they do learn is through hands on activities, where they can actually use their 5 senses to help them understand. They love being involved in their learning, it makes them feel important.

The items I am asking for include a frog hatchery, a complete classroom butterfly kit, inflatable models of the butterfly life cycle and 12 science journals. My special education students love learning science especially if they are completely involved in the lessons. One of the science units our class will be studying is the Life Cycle. Learning about the life cycle of frogs and butterflies from books is interesting. However learning about the life cycle by using the five senses is something that they will remember for a long time. Being able to observe the changes happening and then record them (write and draw) in the journals will enhance the learning experience even more.

If you donate to my class you will provide my special education students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Life Cycle through an unforgettable hands-on experience. Many of the students live in small apartments and do not have the room or money to have activities or pets to help enhance their learning experiences.
