Learning Science in the Information Age

My students need a Google Nexus 7 tablet to use for research and reinforcing learning in class.

My Students

Students today live in the Information Age, where everything is digital. If children do not become proficient at using technology to do their own research, they are put at a disadvantage as they get older. A tablet will allow my students to learn to conduct their own research using technology.

My fifth grade students are curious scientists.

Like most 10-11 year olds, they are fascinated by the world around them. I am lucky to have students who love science as much as I do, and I want to provide them with experiences and knowledge they will never forget.

My Project

A tablet will be a valuable educational tool to enhance student learning. We currently only have one computer in my classroom, and access to other computers is limited. By having a tablet at our fingertips, students will be able to conduct research, read about current science topics, and practice in their learning in a variety of ways. Students who do not have internet access at home can use the tablet to access information I post on my teacher website. I regularly post articles, videos, and games and my website that will reinforce learning, and I don't want any student to get left behind simply because of a lack of technology at home. There are many apps available through the Google store that will help my students to review vocabulary, theories, and content that will extend their learning in ways they won't forget.

By having an accessible tablet for student use, my budding scientists will learn more than just what is written in textbooks - they'll be able to keep up with current news about how scientific advances are affecting us today.

If students are able to meaningfully understand the content, they are more likely to retain the information as oppose to simply memorizing facts and definitions.
