Learning Responsibility with Financial Literacy

My students need to learn to make responsible financial decisions with games, software and stations. They can learn how to count money with bingo, puzzles and quiz cards.

My Students

I am so excited to begin the new year! I will have a new group of little ones to motivate and inspire. They do not realize yet but they will set and work toward goals of a promising future! Working together they can succeed and learn to love school and make positive changes in their community.

I am excited to meet my students and learn where they are from.

Every year we become a more diverse group of learners from all over the world. Many of them are first or second generations Americans from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and other diverse countries that makes our classroom so special as we learn from one another. My school is a Title 1 school so the children do not bring many supplies or materials to the classroom. They do bring enthusiasm, a desire to learn, respect, kindness, and a sense of wonder. Watching them as they work in cooperative groups, supporting each other and learning new things is the most wonderful experience.

My Project

With the materials in this project, my children will begin to appreciate the value of money and how it is earned. The social studies activities and games reinforce that money is something that a community member earns by working and receiving a paycheck. This money has to be saved and spent wisely. Many of my children believe that money is on a white card used to buy food at the store. I want them to be confident in counting, adding and subtracting money. They will do these activities in our class store with the money they earn and save in their wallets from this project. It is not responsible to spend more than you have or borrow money that cannot pay back. I would much rather them learn these lessons in the safety of my classroom than when they are older.

I am hoping my children will see the importance of becoming college or career ready by staying in school.

Many of my students will be the first in their family to graduate high school or college. I want them to see themselves as mechanics, electricians, doctors, teachers, administrative assistants, custodians or whatever they dream of and set goals to finish school. When they earn that first paycheck, they might just remember our lessons on being responsible to save and make wise choices.
