Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am educating CLDE (culturally and linguistically diverse) students who vary from NEP (no English proficiency) to LEP (limited English proficiency). These students are a majority immigrant students whose first and most consistent impression of life in the US is through their time spent at school. Using both physical materials to represent kinesthetic learning as well as having a diverse set of reading materials to cater towards different student curiosities and backgrounds is vital.
I selected a series of books that will speak not only to many of the students' backgrounds but also to the diversity of people who live in the USA.
I emphasized a range of reading levels to meet different students' needs and reach as many individuals as possible.
The Legos are a fantastic resource to give students a break from grammar and language lessons, as learning a new language through in-country immersion is overwhelming. Through the Legos, we can do projects that allow the students to express their thoughts and feelings about the texts that we are reading without the pressure of practicing English oral or written skills. In this way, they can engage with the language in a myriad of formats.
