My Students

My classroom is a specialized classroom for students that are on Individual Education Plans. I have 12 students and 2 assistants. My classroom is broken up into 1:1 teacher and center-based activities. In my class, we cater to a variety of different learning styles.

My students live in an urban district that has a high rate of poverty.

Half of my students speak another language in the home and are considered English Language Learners as well as have a Learning Disability, Autism, Communication Disability or Intellectual Impairment.

My Project

The materials I requested will be used during center time. My students need books, privacy partitions, magnetic letters and boards, a book display stand and Twist and Turn 3-letter Word Builders. The students will be able to use the materials with teacher supervision and eventually independently to aid in their understanding of letters, sound and blending of consonant-vowel-consonant words. I have used the same materials repeatedly in centers and want a new way to introduce letters, sounds and blending. Magnetic letters and boards will be used for Letter Identification and creation of words. Twist and Turn Letters will be used once the students understand letter sounds to create words. The Level 1 and 2 Readers will be used by students who are able to blend and have a sight word vocabulary. Students will be assessed in fluency as well as comprehension. The Wipe Off Sheets are a great way to save on paper and have the students use dry erase markers when learning to write letters. The tongs will be used in a fine motor activity prior to writing. The dividers will cut down on visual stimulation and enable the child to focus on the tasks at hand.

My district has taken a huge financial hit this past year.

Support staff and materials have been cut. With the cuts, there is no money for any new materials. Since my students have individualized programming and various accommodations, we rarely use the provided curriculum. Instead, curriculum is created by me and other special education teachers in the district.
