Learning is an ongoing process. I teach 2nd Grade at Coloma Elementary School. It is a very agricultural based district and the families spend a lot of time working and not a lot of time involved in their child's education. We are also blessed with a lot of ESL learners who are struggling to catch up.
Coloma School students are struggling writers. Our standardized test scores show this. What we have noticed is that our kids are not getting enough practice using their writing skills. I graduated from Coloma High School myself and the one thing I noticed when I went through college was my inferior writing skills. With our school day packed to the brim with our curriculum materials, it makes it hard to spend a lot of time on writing basics. Sure, we use writing everyday across the curriculum, but without a lot of emphasis on the foundations of writing.
My students are in need of a classroom program which helps them continue to use their writing skills outside of the classroom. I want to create an at home learning experience that kids can do with their parents or on their own. I need 20 tote bags so each child can take one home for the week. Inside the tote bag will be a Grammar Tale containing a certain writing/grammar skill. I need the Grammar Tale books to include in the tote along with other teacher-created activities for the students to strengthen their writing skills. My goal is to have my students taking home one tote bag a week for 20 weeks out of the school year. The child can work at their own pace and level to complete the activities in the Writing Totes weekly.
You can make it possible for my 2nd Graders to get a jump start into writing. Strengthening a child's writing skills at an early age not only helps them complete their work but it also gives them the confidence to write more!
