Learning Never Tasted So Good!

My students need an engaging curriculum that helps them apply basic reading, writing and math skills in a hands on cooking project. These materials will provide the lessons to make learning more relevant and memorable.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title 1 Middle school located in South-East San Diego. Most of the kids don't have access to many things we take for granted, both in and out of the classroom. One hundred percent of students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch, and nearly forty-three percent are English learners.

I teach in a special education classroom with students that have moderate to severe disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and Autism.

Their disabilities inhibit them from full inclusion into the community, affect the way they interact with others, and impact their ability to live independently.

The daily functional curriculum in my classroom focuses on basic reading, writing, and math skills, communication skills, social skills, and independent living skills. This helps the students to learn the basic skills that they will need to become independent adults.

My Project

Once a week, my students prepare a snack or a meal to apply the basic skills that they are learning. This last year we made tortilla pizzas, ants on a log, pancakes, and smoothies.

These cooking projects help them to practice reading recipes, following step-by-step directions, predicting what the next step would be, critical thinking, counting, measuring, working with peers, communication, fine motor skills, food safety, etc.

These lessons are written at multiple levels to help every student to be engaged and learning. Each lesson has a visual recipe and activities to help the students think about the cooking activity.
