This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher for a special day program, I have an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of my students. We are 11 students in a CORE autism program at a low income school. Our grades span from Tk-2nd grade. We follow the same curriculum as our regular peers but also emphasize learning social skills and school routines. We need many different ways to learn including technology, hands-on materials, and opportunities to move.
Despite our label of having autism, we choose to break stereotypes by creating a family of empathy and working as a team.
My students often have difficulty communicating their needs and focusing. I am committed to help them make breakthroughs to continue their education and work along side their similarly aged peers.
My Project
My students need differentiated levels of materials to reinforce and practice the skills we are working on. My 11 students are at 11 different levels making it difficult to rely on the curriculum we are given.
Creating my own materials allow me to individualize each students learning experience to best fit them.
I need cardstock to print on and thick laminating sheets to make materials durable to last the year. Velcro tasks allow my students to practice repeatedly until they learn the concept. In addition, we can use velcro tasks to learn independent work skills. Overall, this will save trees so that I am not having to print and copy materials week after week, I can reuse them with students as they are ready for new concepts.
More than half of students from low‑income households
