Learning Music and Culture Through Ukuleles

My Students

My students walk into my music classroom ready to learn and experience music every day. I have three basic rules to my classroom: be respectful, be responsible, and participate always. I want them to leave my room having learned to be nicer people, better people, and active people.

I teach at a Title I school in Pennsylvania where 48% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunches.

This is a small, rural farming community, so even those students who do not qualify for free and reduced lunches do not have extra money to spend on school activities. However, this community is strong in their support for their school and the students have pride in their school and are eager to learn every day so that they can one day achieve their dreams.

My Project

The ukulele is a wonderful instrument to introduce students to guitar playing as well as teaching them about the unique culture and history of the state of Hawaii.

Many of my 5th and 6th grade students have expressed interest in learning how to play the guitar, however due to the extremely rural and low poverty nature of our school district and attendance area, many do not have the money to purchase a guitar let alone pay for and attend guitar lessons.

Having a classroom set of ukuleles will allow me to introduce guitar playing to my 5th and 6th grade students allowing them to experience a guitar-like instrument prior to their family making a financial investment and the student then losing interest. Learning to play the ukulele will also reinforce the concepts of pitch, rhythm, and style that have been taught in their general music classes in the earlier grades.

Additionally, it is important that students experience music from many different cultures around the world. Many students do not know about or understand the incredible history or culture of Hawaii, a state within our own very country. I will be able to incorporate cross-curricular teaching within my classroom to enhance the educational experiences of the students.
