My Students

The famous Walt Disney once said, “Our greatest national resource is the minds of our children.”

In today's age, it is very difficult for my students to get their best education due to the economic disadvantage of their families.

My students all come from low-income families and lack the necessary school supplies. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning how to read to learn. Our diverse group loves to explore outside, learn new concepts, and get down and dance to a sweet tune!

In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.

We are in Louisiana and are experiencing higher COVID numbers than others in the United States. We are always on edge if we will get sent back to 100% virtual learning. As my students make gains in our classroom, they begin to attempt small chunks of the day with their typically developing peers. My classroom is about building skills to get included. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways.

My Project

My students often struggle with their ability to understand their emotions and how to properly express what they are feeling. I have discovered that teaching students about their emotions are best done by using materials that are colorful, inviting, and relatable. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more difficult for students to be in-person learning and this prohibits them from being able to accurately express their feelings, emotions, and try to resolve conflict. During this pandemic, we have not been able to work together in class to help develop correct communication skills.

Now that we are going back into the classroom, I want my students to have the resources in their hands ready to use to build better communication skills and self-awareness.

Students will have the ability to express the emotions they are feeling after we take time to teach each emotion stone and then help create a daily chart we will use to document how our feelings change throughout the day or many times in our day. These are foundational skills that all children must develop and continue to expand on as they grow, so they are great communicators later on in life. Students will be able to successfully address moments of anger, disappointment, confusion, anxiety, etc because they have had time to correctly develop each emotion and the correct way to handle each one.

Students often lack the communication skills once developed at home because many households are having to work multiple jobs to sustain basic necessities. Since parents, grandparents, and other caregivers are having to work many jobs they do not have the time to discuss their emotions and have parents address the techniques needed to build fluent communication skills to accurately describe their feelings and express them in a positive way.
