Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a high school math teacher, I know that being successful in school often requires a positive attitude. If a student can be successful at something, they are more willing to try a new math problem. I have a collection of math/logic toys, such as a Rubik's Cube and Rush Hour. The students play with these toys for a few minutes when they come into class. I believe that solving these puzzles requires the same type of logical thinking that math problems require. Students often ask how math relates to the real world and I think this is one way to show them how mathematical thinking can translate outside of the classroom, even if it is just to master a toy. Many of the students at my school have never been successful in school and solving a puzzle is one of the few things they have mastered. The smiles on their faces when they solve one of the harder toys or one they have worked on for weeks is priceless. I use this success to get them to try our math topic of the day. I have received many of my toys from my stepmother as presents and bought others at a math conference. The group of students I have this year are particularly interested in my set of toys and puzzles and I am anxious to get some new ones to challenge them. I have found several that are of the type most popular with my students. Thank you for your support.
