Learning Math Forever With Technology

My students need 4 chrome books and 3 mini iPads to assist them in developing their math awareness skills, and level of competency in this vital subject area.

My Students

I refer to my students as a "grape bunch" because, like their namesake, they are sweet and worthy of our attention. They have shown such academic and social/emotional growth over the past few months that everyday I go to my job wondering how I can improve the quality of their learning experiences

Ours is a title one school in a high poverty area.

The class has 12 awesome fourth and fifth grade students with different and similar special needs. Yet, despite its bridged nature, my class is a cohesive unit, where students work together to explore concepts presented in our inquiry based curriculum. Their love for learning is obvious as you enter the classroom. There you can see them sharing ideas in small group activities, engaging in independent reading or math tasks in any part of the room, or on the floor in a small group using different strategies to solve a math problem. Yet, math is extremely challenging for them. I have introduced them to many Internet based fluency exercises to build their math stamina. The few computers that I have are slow and old and frustrate the students' efforts. Still their desire to learn is evident and this allows them to sit sometimes 4 at a lazy desktop and look over each other's head to share in the task. My students love using technology.

My Project

My desire is for my students to love math! They struggle with this subject. I want to make math more visual and interactive. The computers will energize math for my special students. No longer will they have to wait on a computer to complete their differentiated math exercises. My students will have enough computers to take turns completing their math fluency building exercises via "Reflex Math" in the fifteen minute allotted time frame. They can improve their math skills through the many educational sites that are readily available on the Internet. The laptops will enable them to go to their favorite spots in the room, away from the crowd, and work with the teacher in a one on one session especially if they are struggling with an operation, or simply share with a peer. The mini ipads will be a plus for my highly challenged students who require lighter devices to manipulate. They can use the various apps to explore the many math concepts. Times tables will no longer be scary.

The chrome computers and mini ipads will help in making my classroom more technologically friendly and internet oriented.

My students need to stay on par with their non disabled peers in every aspect of their learning. They need to know how to use math apps to enhance their learning, how to research math topics, how to improve their math stamina by building their fluency, and how to use the technology to create drawings with given dimensions. They need technology for their lifelong learning.
