Learning Math and Literacy Skills Through Our Senses!

Help me give my students stamps, Wikki Stix, kinetic sand, magnets and molds to practice math and literacy skills through sensory play.

My Project

I teach preschool for an at-risk program. Every year I am so lucky to get to teach some of the most fun loving, creative kiddos! While we provide a safe, nurturing environment at school, a lot of my students have been through some kind of trauma which can lead to dysregulation.

An amazing way to help with this is sensory play!

I have made this list of items to enhance their sensory play with educational components.

Students can mold and squeeze the kinetic sand into letters and numbers and push the dough stampers into playdoh- working on number and letter recognition as well as self soothing.

Students can focus on the feel of materials with the magnets and Wikki Stix while again working on those math and literacy skills.

They can use the foam letters in the water table or to make art projects or to practice spelling their name or friends’ names.

All of these activities will also help them with social skills as we work on sharing, turn taking, and working as a group. They are all amazing ways to sharpen fine motor skills to get their little hands ready for writing!
