My Students
My enthusiastic second graders are located in a rural setting. Because of our geography, students have extremely limited access to opportunities compared to the students I taught in California and Colorado.
60% of our student population are on free and reduced lunch.
These enthusiastic students share the same potential to learn and grow as the students I taught in California's Central Valley and Denver, Colorado.
Geography does not affect ability, but it impacts opportunity. Please help by filling our classroom with books and resources to solidify a growth mindset!
My Project
Last year, I used music to set the tone in our classroom by streaming music throughout the entire day. We used music for thinking, inspiring our writing, moving between activities (and moving to stretch), calming us down and pepping us up.
Each student knew I would adjust the music if it s/he felt it interfered with his/her learning.
A small number of times a student discretely asked me to change the music (which I did). At the end of the year I forgot my speaker at home (I brought it each day). Unanimously, we agreed our class flow and learning was better with tunes!
This year, I'm working intentionally to streamline how I'm incorporating the senses. Being able to SEE and demonstrate is crucial to little learners like my second graders. By connecting an Apple TV device to my projector I can easily show students what is on any given tablet. This is huge because most apps are not available on desktop computers (what I can currently use to show students). I find myself needing to explain to individual students which depletes time for everyone.
Finally, I'm asking for essential oils and a diffuser. Not only can we have scents for energy, but during flu and cold season we can help our class stay healthier and suppress coughs.
