it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 2nd graders are amazingly hard workers who want nothing more than to succeed. Sometimes the little ones, just like many adults, find sitting in a normal everyday chair becomes monotonous and boring. Thus, they become bored and then begin to lose interest in instruction. This year I would like to try something new with them during certain times of the day...flexible seating. With the flexible seating they will be able to choose their own seat...a new, fun position in the classroom....a way to look at their learning. It will help my very active 2nd graders get out their "wiggles" while still remaining focused on their learning.
My Project
The new Learning Lounge will make learning in Mrs. Smith's 2nd grade more fun and exciting. It will also help my most active students explore new ways of learning while still being their normal, active selves.
Students will be able to choose their own seats during certain learning moments in order to help them focus better on the material being presented.
Giving them the opportunity to be part of the decision making in the classroom will also help them feel more invested in their own learning and help them learn to make responsible choices when it comes to their learning environment and what's best for them. When students are made to feel a part of the classroom they are more likely to buy into the learning.
Students choosing their own seat and making seating flexible for them will also allow them to collaborate easier with those that will help them and push them to be a better student. Students need to be able to sit comfortably and in such a way that will allow for ease of discussion that is focused on learning and not "wiggling" around in hard seat trying to get comfortable. Collaborative/cooperative learning is a big part of the academic environment and being able to choose where you sit (where you are comfortable) and who you sit with is a major factor in successful cooperative learning.
