My Students
Our students are a lively bunch of middle schoolers who love to read, write, sing, paint, sculpt, draw, compute, play, experiment, think, create, share and grow!
We live in a mid-sized suburban city in Wisconsin and have a very close-knit community.
Our school is made up of nearly 650 students of varying socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. We know that life is about more than just academics and encourage our kids to find their passion both in and outside of school.
My Project
I would like to create an extended learning space called the Learning Lounge where kids can go after their in-class assignments have been completed. Some kids like to read quietly when their work is done, but others like to stay active. As middle schoolers, they enjoy talking with friends, working with their hands, and being creative. They would love to have a designated space of hands-on materials where they can interact with each other, instead of always being asked to work quietly and independently.
This space would have items such as jigsaw puzzles, brain teasers, educational games, and art supplies to keep our more active students occupied and engaged when they have some spare time.
Students will also be able to visit the Learning Lounge before and after school, during study hall, or after eating lunch.
Specific items on our Learning Lounge wishlist include:
-Jigsaw puzzles: 3 different puzzles for kids to work on throughout the school year
-Puzzle tray: to hold all the pieces of the puzzle currently being worked on; will make it easy to move the puzzle to a new location if necessary
-The Laser Game: strategy-based board game similar to chess
-Gel pens: for artists who want to draw or use our coloring books
-Trapdoor Checkers: a new twist on the old game of checkers; the board has trap doors built in to some of the spaces, making the game more challenging
-Safecracker 50: a wooden puzzle that requires students to rotate 16 columns of numbers so they all equal 50
-Kingou Interlocking Brainteaser: wooden puzzle that easily comes apart but takes skill and concentration to put back together
-Rubic's cube: students will try to put the 6 sides back to their proper colors
